HOCKEY sensation Kirsty Mackay paid a visit to students at West Cheshire College this week.

The English Cup Winners champion met students to host a masterclass in the sport and talk about her career to students and members of the public.

Kirsty, who narrowly missed out on a place in the Team GB Olympic squad, gave two motivational talks, and taught the students how they could improve their skills in hockey, as well as spending time looking around the college’s new fitness centre.

Kirsty, who won gold in the 2010 Indoor European Championships, was visiting the college as part of its 12-month Olympic and Paralympic celebrations, which have included visits from Britain’s greatest Olympian, Sir Steve Redgrave, and Olympic high-jumper Ben Challenger.

Kirsty said she was impressed with the skill and talent of the students she met during her visit.

“I really enjoyed seeing West Cheshire College,” she said.

“The students were very enthusiastic; everybody was very responsive to my talk and they asked some really interesting questions.

“I was amazed about all of the Olympic activities that have been going on at the college – they have certainly embraced the 2012 Games.”

Steph Garrett, assistant manager of health and well-being at the college, said: “We were delighted to welcome Kirsty as part of our year-long programme of events to celebrate the Olympics and Paralympic Games.

“It was a great opportunity for our students to be involved in the masterclass run by somebody who has won gold medals in the sport.”
