A THOUSAND runners and walkers are due to hit the streets of Ellesmere Port on Sunday for the inaugural Sport in the Port event.

Residents of Ellesmere Port and beyond have been invited to participate in 10k and 5k races and a one mile fun run in the centre of the town, with the added option of running in super hero fancy dress.

Race director Andy White said: “There is something here for everyone.

“A 10k over a flat, fast course, perfect for those new to the distance or wanting to set their personal best; a 5k for both runners, joggers and walkers; and a walk or run around a circuit just less than a mile which is suitable for runners, walkers and pushchairs.”

The 10k starts at 10am at Civic Way and winds through different parts of the town to finish at Civic Way. The 5k starts at 10.20am at Civic Way and is two laps on the roads around Whitby Park, finishing at Civic Way.

The fun run will start at 9.30am on Civic Way and run to and around Whitby Park where it will finish.

All three runs are on fully closed roads.

Andy added: “The 10k and 5k races have sparked quite a bit of interest from local running clubs as well as drawing in athletes from clubs based in Cheshire, Merseyside, North Wales and beyond so some good races are in prospect.

“With it being Father’s Day we thought the superhero theme in the one mile run/walk would be fun and we also hope some super heroines will also answer the call to assemble.”

Roy Traynor, of Ellesmere Port Running Club, said: “Its going to put Ellesmere Port on the running map.

“We hope it encourages people to take up the challenge of running in their area. You don’t have to be an Olympic athlete to take part and you will feel fantastic when you have finished!”

Neil Fagan, of lead sponsors URENCO UK, said: “We see ‘Sport in the Port’ as a key initiative in encouraging sport for everyone in the Ellesmere Port area.”

The organisers are keen to get the community involved whether by participating in one of the runs; by helping to put it on or by merely turning out to cheer on the competitors.

“It’ll be quite a spectacle!” added Andy. For details go to www.sportintheport.co.uk.
