WREXHAM manager Denis Smith paid tribute to his patched-up squad, following yesterday's 3-1 Racecourse victory over Barnet, their first since the opening day of the season.

The Dragons, who were without seven senior players due to injury and suspension, gave home league debuts to three recent recruits in Robbie Foy, Paul Warhurst and Paul Linwood, each of whom made a significant contribution to the home side's success.

"It's been a difficult start to the season so for the lads to perform like that was brilliant," said Smith. "But to be fair to Barnet, they contributed to the game as well because they came to play football and they gave it a go.

"There were a few tired legs out there but players like Paul Warhurst, who played a full game on Saturday, and Jon Walters, who was an injury doubt until the kick-off, turned in superb performances," he added.

"We passed the ball a lot better and that was the key to the goals we scored."

The opener, on 33 seconds, was gobbled up by Mark Jones, who dominated the match before leaving the field 17 minutes from time.

"He was suffering from something like a severe stitch but we don't think it's serious," said Smith. "The lad is a good player. The people who were here had their money's-worth."
