DENIS SMITH last night praised Mark Jones’ “exceptional” contribution to Wrexham after the midfielder was named Welsh Club Player of The Year.

“I didn’t know about it and I don’t think he did either,” said the Dragons boss. “But I’m pleased about it. We haven’t had many awards from the Welsh FA over the last few years so to get two in one night I’m delighted.”

The 22-year-old, a hugely popular figure with Wrexham fans for his spectacular long-range goals, has scored five times in 13 games for Wrexham this season, while last term he was on target an impressive 15 times.

“He scores exceptional goals,” Smith added. “He’s a player who, when it comes off it comes off, and if it doesn’t it doesn’t. You have to go through the good and the bad with players like that to get the exceptional.”

“Mark had an exceptional season for us last season, and he started this season reasonably well although he’s had a dip in form, which is understandable for young players. But what he achieved last year in a short space of time was exceptional.”
