ONE of Ellesmere Port’s oldest roads is in a dangerous ‘state of disrepair’, according to a concerned resident..

Collapsed and cracked kerbs and a sinking pavement have created a dangerous slope which recently sent an elderly woman crashing to the ground.

Winston Richards saw the woman tumble to the ground after struggling to negotiate the tarmac pavement near his home on Vale Road.

He went to her aid and urged her to visit the nearby solicitors to put in a claim against the council, but she relented.

Mr Richards said: “They’re spending millions of pounds around the town and on Vale Road the kerb stones are nearly non-existent.

“Last winter you couldn’t walk on the pavement because they’re slopping so badly toward the gutter.

“The kerb is crumbling and broken and sunk into the road.

“When it’s icy you can’t walk you just slide straight off it.

“Something needs to be done about it because somebody’s going to get really hurt.”

Mr Richards has maps showing there was a time when the town of Ellesmere Port consisted of just two roads, Whitby Road and Vale Road.

He added that as a town centre road, more care should be taken to keep it up to standard.

He said: “I’ve lived here for five years and keep thinking the council are going to do something soon, but the years just roll on by.

“Come winter it’s going to be a really difficult place to walk again.”

Cheshire West and Chester Council spokeswoman Laura Johnson said nothing would be done until October at the earliest.

She said: “A scheme is in place to replace the carriageway and the pavements.

“It won’t be carried out until the works at the Whitby Road/Sutton Way junction is complete.

“The scheme will be on the list for the contractor who wins the tender in October.”
