HARD-UP Wrexham will scoop a £75,000 windfall from next month's FA Cup second round tie at Scun-thorpe United.

The Dragons received the financial boost after Sky Sports confirmed it would be screening the clash live from Glanford Park on Friday, December 3.

And, if they were to win, the club would receive a further £24,000 for progressing to the third round, meaning they would bank almost £100,000.

Manager Denis Smith told the Mail: 'It's important for the club because it keeps Wrexham in the public eye and, given our financial situation, it might just make someone come forward and buy the club because that's what we need.'

However, as the Mail was going to press, Wrexham's future was still very much up in the air, given the planned winding-up petition in the High Court.

The most drastic outcome of the hearing would be the closure of North Wales' only professional football club, and in the case of any reprieve, Wrexham would run the risk of being docked the mandatory 10-points from the Football League for going into administration. This would plunge the 16th-placed Dragons into a League One relegation battle.

Smith wants a resolution - and quickly. 'We can't go on living like this from Saturday to Saturday and waiting to see what happens because that's not the way things should be, and you can only put up with it for so long.'

The boss is hoping to lead his embattled team into Saturday's home match against Bristol City, before travelling to Torquay United on Tuesday.

Last Saturday, Smith's men ended a two-game losing sequence when they won 4-0 at Conference outfit Hayes to setup the lucrative outing at Scun-thorpe.

Smith said: 'It was a satisfactory performance. There were certain things we wouldn't have got away with in our division, but the most important thing was winning.

'Scunthorpe is not the best draw because it will be difficult. They're doing very well in League Two and they beat Chesterfield - who are in our division - in the cup on Saturday.

'We're going to have to go there and prove we're the better team.'

Meanwhile, veteran striker Chris Armstrong has had a scan on a persistent Achilles injury, whereas Dean Bennett received surgery to cure his hernia problem.
