CHILDREN at Bwlchgwyn Primary School put on a festive performance to take the 'humbug' out of Christmas in a musical concert.

Staff and pupils devised their own play, entitled Christmas Musicality, which combined the traditional Nativity, classic stories and fairy tales with popular show tunes.

At the beginning of the play, performed on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon last week, a grumpy Scrooge-like caretaker is tidying up the school stage in preparation for another Christmas concert and finds a basket of old props from previous plays.

Each prop represents a different musical or play previously performed at the school and the children join the caretaker on stage to sing and dance to various show tunes from musicals including Mary Poppins and Oliver!

In the end, the caretaker cheers up and joins in the festive fun with the children.

The play, written by trainee teacher, Rachel Valentine, also has the traditional Nativity play woven into the script which is performed by the reception classes.

Headteacher Martin Baldry said the performance was a great success.

'Normally concerts are split between reception and juniors but we did it altogether and it worked really well.

'All the staff worked really hard on it and it was very well attended by parents on both afternoons.

'It was a good chance for the children to do some drama, singing and performing in front of an audience.'
