SHADOW sports minister Jeremy Hunt believes clubs like Wrexham FC should get more financial help for the community work they do.

After visiting the Racecourse and holding talks with directors, including chief executive Paul Retout, Mr Hunt was full of praise for the club and its “Phoenix-like rise” from the ashes of relegation and administration.

“It‘s very disappointing they haven’t been promoted into the League, but Wrexham’s is an encouraging story. It’s impressive that they kept the Academy going even after losing £90,000 a year from the league.

“I share their concern for the financially precarious position of clubs at the lower end of the leagues and clubs which are relegated. I think it is something I would want talks with the FA about, recognising the social benefits smaller clubs have on their communities.”

Mr Hunt welcomed the club’s plans for a student village and new stand.

After Wrexham, he went to see Prestatyn’s digital cinema development.
