SHOPPERS could be boosted by an early Christmas present after plans were announced to restore free parking in the town centre.

The sensational move was proposed by leader Justin Madders during last night’s environment committee meeting and was unanimously supported by councillors.

They are now hoping to bring forward the relevant council meetings in order to push through the scheme in time for the festive period.

It would see the main town centre car park made completely free, although there would be a four-hour limit due to an agreement in place with Asda.

Councillors had originally been asked to consider free parking after 3pm.

Independent politicians Jonathan Starkey, John Wilson and Henny Moore launched a campaign back in August with the support of market traders and the Port Arcades.

More than 7,000 people had signed a petition in support of the move.
