New Brighton 36 Northwich 27

NORTHWICH were edged out of a thrilling encounter as New Brighton had too much power at Hartsfield on Saturday.

The Blacks can take positives from the loss as their talented back line were head and shoulders above their counterparts and they led 27-26 with just 15 minutes left.

But the Seasiders had too much strength and prop Lotu Neuneutau’s late try completed a total of five from the hosts’ pack, including a hat-trick from number eight Katilimoni Tuipoluto and one from former Northwich prop John Brotherton.

The visitors announced their arrival in the game when Chris Heywood broke blindside to score.

Powerhouse Chris James boosted hopes when he intercepted the ball to score with Matt Bebbington adding the extras.

Star performer Kiwi Simon Pratt then brought Northwich right back into it by finishing a flowing backs move. Then winger Joel Barber put the Blacks ahead with a try in the corner, with Bebbington converting from the touchline, making the score 27-23.

But the hosts fought back and the Blacks succumbed to their third defeat of the season that leaves them sixth in North Two West.

On Saturday, Northwich travel to Liverpool St Helens (2.15pm ko).

Other scores: Northwich 2nds 14 Burnage 2nds 22 (tries: Senior, Keegan; cons: Senior 2). Northwich U15s 0 Wirral U15s 10.
