AN EIGHT-YEAR-OLD schoolboy was killed after being struck by a bus in Widnes town centre yesterday afternoon.

The boy, who has not been named, had just finished school when the tragedy occurred.

It is believed he ran out between two parked delivery wagons and was in collision with a single-decker bus. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Accident investigators cordoned off a section of Milton Road shortly after the accident, which happened at around

4.20pm. Residents have reported increased traffic since a superstore opened in August.

One woman, who was close to the scene of the accident but declined to be named, said: "I was with my five-year-old son and had just come out of a phone box when I heard the sound of a bus slamming on its brakes.

"It couldn't have been going very fast. The bus driver stood next to me and phoned for an ambulance.

"The little lad must have ran into the road from between two delivery wagons, which were waiting in a lay-by.

"The bus driver couldn't have seen him coming out.

"This road is really busy and has seen 80% more traffic since the superstore opened."

Cheshire Police were last night unable to name the victim, who it is believed attended the nearby Simms Cross Junior School.
