THOUSANDS of people lined the banks of the River Mersey to watch the end of the Clipper 07-08 round-the-world yacht race.

Liverpool 08 skipper Ben Galloway, of Wrexham, was the first off the Liverpool 08 boat as the crew arrived at the Albert Dock.

Crowds braved rain to welcome home the 10-strong fleet after their 35,000 mile journey.

On-lookers exploded with cheers and frantically waved flags as Liverpool 08 came into view in 5th position.

Commentators on the PA system said tears were streaming down the faces of the crew.

Ben said: “I don’t think you can sum up what it’s like. It’s an incredible feeling coming home. I’m very happy.

“Wrexham’s just down the road so I’m the nearest thing to a Scouse skipper, but coming back on the final leg, half of the crew are from Liverpool so there’s a really strong atmosphere on board.”
