WREXHAM assistant manager Kevin Russell has been granted a testimonial match against Manchester United.

The administrators running the club's affairs have approved the request in recognition of Russell's loyal service over a period of more than 12 years.

Sir Alex Ferguson has agreed to send a representative XI to play the Dragons in a pre-season friendly at the Racecourse on Tuesday, August 2, providing a high-profile launch for Russell's testimonial year.

Russell said: "I'm delighted and grateful that Manchester United have agreed to provide the opposition for my testimonial. "We have been working on a testimonial for a considerable period of time, but circumstances at the club in recent months have made life difficult.

"We have known about the game for a couple of months and I'm pleased at last to be able to confirm that it is going ahead on August 2.

"With what's been happening at the Racecourse, the testimonial has been on the backburner but I know Denis Smith and the players are now looking forward to the game.

"Although I was not brought up in Wrexham, I have spent the best part of 20 years in the area and my children were born and went to school in the town."

Russell had two playing spells at Wrexham from 1987-1989 and 1995-2002. Following Smith's appointment in October 2001, Russell assumed the duties of first team coach and assistant manager.
