THERE was once a time when Winnington Park’s stated ambition was to play and compete in the same league as Sale – this isn’t quite how the dream was meant to be.
Park are struggling in Cheshire and South Lancs One, having suffered successive relegations, whereas Sale continue to enjoy life at their Heywood Road ground, once home to Premiership outfit Sale Sharks.
Park started well enough as an early chance inside two minutes went begging as the final pass went astray as winger Rob Garbett closed in.
A Ben Elliot penalty was all the Burrow Hill hosts had to show from a tough first half. The visitors enjoyed possession and scored two tries and a penalty for a 13-3 lead.
The second half saw Park’s defence in disarray as the Sale hooker waltzed through several tackles to score under the posts.
Park’s plight worsened soon after as Andy Evans was sin-binned for a technical offence.
Ben Elliott found some space out wide to lift the gloom momentarily with a try, which he also converted.
A nasty hand injury to centre Sam Barton gave Sale their next try as they took play through the gap to score as Barton was being treated.
To their credit, Park continued to look for points but an intercepted pass saw the Sale winger score from 60 yards against the run of play.
Park salvaged some pride when Harry Stubbs crossed late on, but Sale had the final word with another try.
