THE words rugby strip have taken on an entirely new meaning at Winnington Park.
Indeed, the players and some officials as well are about to get a little extra, er, exposure after taking their kit off for club funds.
Winnington have produced their first glamour calendar, although no one there is sure whether glamour is the right word.
Organiser John Pickering, 40, said: “It was a laugh. Most of our volunteers come from the more mature end of the club and, as some of the shots were outside, we chose a quiet Saturday.
“Even so we saw one or two curtains twitching nearby and moved inside.
“The final 12 were chosen by some women so I must assure them it was a very cold day.’
Linda Fogg, a member of Winnington’s centenary committee, came up with the idea and with a group of her workmates made the final choice.
She said: “It was my idea. I had an old England World Cup calendar and thought why shouldn’t we do it.
“Surprisingly the younger players weren’t interested. Those in their 30s were dead keen to get their kit off, though. It must be a question of confidence.
“The guys clearly enjoyed themselves, though there were some shots definitely not fit for public viewing!”
The models included second teamer Mark Phoenix, a former Mr UK, and also president Roy Palin and chairman Richard Elliot, minus all their trimmings of office, of course.
Just 300 calendars have been published and they are available at £5 each from the club or John Pickering on 07751251282.
“If there’s a good uptake we’ll do it again next year,’ said Linda.
