MARCHWIEL Environment Group (MEG) is embarking on a project to improve public rights of way.

The project aims to encourage people to walk their local footpaths by providing maps and guidance leaflets.

MEG secretary Jude Greenwood said: 'The idea for the project came from details in the Press about what had been achieved by a scheme in Holt, so we invited Wrexham council's rights-of-way officer to a meeting to tell us how it worked.

'Fortunately Wrexham has found the money to support it.'

Geoff Hughes will lead members of the group in surveying footpaths in the Marchwiel area. They will check the condition of stiles, signs, bridges and carry out minor jobs such as trimming brambles. Bigger problems will be reported to the rights-of-way team.

The council's rights-of-way officer John Marchant said: 'Wrexham council doesn't have the resources to be able to improve every footpath within the county borough, so the group's efforts are very much appreciated.'
