IT WAS for the sake of the children that Comberbach Rose Fete went ahead on Saturday.

Many were unaware of the tragedy that had occurred, and after consulting parents, teachers and local clergy organisers, although shocked and upset themselves, decided to carry on with it.

In the end the parade went ahead in silence and instead of touring the village headed directly to the arena at Comberbach Primary School.

A fête spokesman said: “We decided to go ahead with the fete because some of the children weren’t aware of what went on and couldn’t understand what was happening.”

Music was kept to a minimum for the traditional pageantry in the arena and the event ended with prayers for the little boy lead by local clergy.
