TV VIEWERS have been given a behind-the-scenes look at the work of vets at the University of Liverpool’s Leahurst campus.

Animal-lover Rolf Harris recently filmed Rolf’s Animal Clinic at the high-tech facility based on Chester High Road near Hinderton.

One of the UK’s top veterinary colleges, the Leahurst campus has three specialist hospitals treating cats and dogs, horses and farm animals.

There are also two teams of mobile vets treating patients in their homes.

Staff are on call 24 hours a day and see about 28,000 patients each year.

Professor Susan Dawson, head of the university’s School of Veterinary Science, said: “We were delighted with the opportunity to open our doors to Channel 5 and were pleased to provide an insight into both our clinical work and the fantastic learning experience we offer to our student vets.”

In the first episode Rolf followed the trials and tribulations of a pet alpaca with a skin complaint and emergency surgery was carried out on a horse with colic.

On another show Professor John Innes corrected a deformed leg bone in a huge St Bernard dog.

The show airs on Tuesdays at 8pm on Channel 5.
