Work on a multi-million pound project to improve a Northwich roundabout will get underway this week.

The advanced utility works on the A559 Chester Way/Leicester Street roundabout, which will last until the end of the year, will centre on Station Road and will take place mainly in the footway but there will be some road lance closures on Chester Way.

The scheme is financed with £3.4million of Government ‘pinch point’ funding and will increase the size of the roundabout.

Cllr Brian Clarke, cabinet member for economic development and infrastructure, said: “There could well be some disruption while the BT work takes place however this preparatory work will make sure that the major improvement scheme can get underway in January.

“The roundabout works from early next year will increase the capacity of the roundabout to ensure the road infrastructure can support the widespread regeneration of Northwich.

“The extra traffic will be generated by new retail and leisure developments such as Barons Quay, Memorial Court and the Lion Salt Works.

“Once complete, the whole scheme aims to improve safety for drivers and cyclists, and significantly improve traffic flow.”

BT will divert equipment before the major improvement scheme begins in January.
