DAVE King won’t be heading for a quiet life when he retires from his job as head of chemistry at Sir John Deane’s College.

Instead of a pipe and slippers in front of the fire the adventurous scientist, who has taught generations of Mid Cheshire students, is looking forward to indulging in his hobbies – hill walking, working his allotment, and extreme sports!

“For the first year of my retirement, my plan is to have no plan – to enjoy the freedom of choice and head off for the day when I want to,” said Dave, who has previously organised staff trips to try out paragliding and white water rafting.

Dave trained for his degree and PhD at Manchester University before taking up the job at Sir John Deane’s 34 years ago.

He recalled: “It felt like going back to my own grammar school – stepping into the main hall..

“Although it has gradually changed over the years, Sir John Deane’s has remained a great place to teach and study.

“I am now teaching some of the children of former students which brings it home how much time has passed.”

Andrew Jones, college principal, added: “Dave is exactly the sort of person who justifies his own view that the quality of staff makes this place what it is – his contribution to the success of the college over so many years has been tremendous and he will be much missed.”
