A PENSIONER has raised £1,100 for charity after completing a gruelling 300-mile bike ride from London to Paris.

Chris Byrne, 66, from Ellesmere Port, rode alongside 72 younger cyclists from across the country during the four-day trek.

He became a keen cyclist after retiring from the town’s Vauxhall Motors plant after 38 years in 2006.

The money he raised from the event will be donated to Christian Aid.

Mr Byrne, who worked at the Vauxhall Motors plant for 38 years, said:

“It was a fantastic experience arriving in front of the Eiffel Tower the day before the Tour-de-France hit town, and it’s very satisfying to know we have made a small improvement to some people’s lives.”
