A RUNCORN restaurant has been closed down by environmental health officers using emergency powers following the discovery of a cockroach infestation.

Investigations began following a complaint on August 1 about insect activity around Tandoori Nights Indian Restaurant on High Street.

A visit to the premises revealed adult and nymph cockroaches and egg cases in the main food preparation area and in first floor storage rooms.

The closure is indefinite until the council is satisfied that the premises no longer pose a health risk.

Meanwhile, the council is urging other businesses to take steps to ensure their premises stay pest free.

Tips include blocking holes and open drains, and carrying out routine pest monitoring, as well and storing rubbish in regularly-emptied bins.
