BOROUGH residents have until the end of next month to have their say on the naming of Winsford’s new multi-million pound leisure centre.

Vale Royal Borough Council, which will make the final decision, is holding an online consultation in a bid to gauge public opinion on what the new £10.8m facility – which is due to be finished by the end of April – should be called.

The Winsford Lifestyle Centre is the current working title, but Vale Royal Lifestyle Centre has also been suggested – even though the borough will no longer exist come April 1.

Winsford Town Council wants to name the facility the James Clarke VC Centre, after a hometown war hero who remains the only Mid Cheshire soldier ever to be awarded the Victoria Cross.

Town mayor Des Worthington said: “This is a real opportunity for the people of Winsford to help shape the future by supporting the town council’s suggestion, which is backed by the Royal British Legion and RSM Clarke’s former Regiment, the Lancashire Fusiliers.”
