THREE of Wrexham's rising young stars have been called up to the Welsh under-21 squad to face Serbia and Montenegro in this month's crucial Euro 2004 qualifier.

Defender Craig Morgan, who was only promoted to the Wrexham senior squad at the end of last season, will be joined on the plane to the Balkans by under-21 regulars Paul Whitfield and Shaun Pejic.

Fellow Dragons Matt Crowell and Mark Jones are on stand-by, and physio Mel Pejic will also be joining the squad.

Morgan said he was 'shocked' to learn his rapid development has been rewarded with a call-up, but the 18-year-old, who has been capped at all levels of the Welsh youth ranks, said he was eager to complete a full collection.

'After this there's just one to go - the big one,' he said. 'That may be a while coming and I'm delighted to be given this chance. It's another step on the ladder.

'Travelling to Serbia will really be an experience and with the season just starting I'm going to have a hectic August.'

The under-21 squad will head to South Wales for a training session immediately after Wrexham's Division Two visit to Notts County on Saturday, August 16, before flying out to Belgrade the following Monday.

They will then face Serbia and Montenegro in their Group Nine qualifier at Novi Sad - which is about an hour's drive northwest of the Serbian capital - on Tuesday, August 19.

But Morgan, who has been widely linked with Premiership giants Leeds United, said he is concentrating on earning a regular starting place at the Racecourse.

'That's got to be my aim for the season,' he said. 'I've already signed a professional contract and I'm looking to establish myself.'
