FIGHTING against the odds in League Two has been draining for Denis Smith's Wrexham FC.
So in a bid to reignite the Dragons' flame for a playoff push, assistant manager Kevin Russell took the squad on a bonding session at Ultra Adventure Driving just outside Llangollen.
Wrexham's off-roaders were World Cup hero Dennis Lawrence, Matt Crowell, Jon Walters, Andy Holt, Dean Bennett, Simon Spender, Matt Derbyshire, assistant boss Kevin Russell and coach Brian Carey.
They went along to climb up hills and down valleys at the invitation of off-road expert Stuart Walker.
'Their session started with a very muddy thrash around the obstacle course,' said Stuart.
'Then they completely plastered the vehicles with mud and through the long, deep waterhole and the wet, muddy hill section.
'Midfielder Danny Williams' group got stuck in the mud, much to the delight of their team-mates.
'They then went to our Lunar landscape quarry where they spent a short while in the classroom having some refreshments and learning some basics about off-road driving and finding out about the 4x4 trials competition they were going to take part in.'
The team was split into four groups. Each group had to try and negotiate four different sections of the Ultra Adventure quarry consisting of deep mud, water, hills, and stone, avoiding cones. If any cones were touched, they received penalty points.
The winning team was Mike Ingham, Mark Jones and Matt Crowell, despite claims from the losers they had moved their cones.
'I am a huge fan of Wrexham Football Club and taught Danny Williams to drive last year,' said Stuart.
'I invited them for a team-building session because it is always good to refresh yourself and do things with your team-mates away from the training ground.'
Russell felt the day was valuable for team spirit.
'It was absolutely brilliant,' he said. 'The team enjoyed a bonding experience that was relaxing yet competitive and, at this stage of the season, that can only benefit us.'
Stuart Walker's father Sam, 84, also went along to meet the team. He has been an ardent supporter of Wrexham since 1928.
