DESPITE the gale-force winds which battered the region last night emergency services reported a quiet time in Ellesmere Port and Neston.

The only major incident was the closure of the Hooton to Chester railway line due to a fallen tree.

Elsewhere, both police and fire crews were called to deal with a series of overturned lorries on the Thelwell Viaduct, near Warrington.

The Runcorn and Widnes Bridge was still closed to high- sided vehicles well into this morning as the high winds continued.
