CHILDREN from an Ellesmere Port primary school made friends with elderly residents of a care scheme.

Pupils of Westminster Primary School joined forces with residents at Hollymere Extra Care Development to take part in the ‘Big Skills Share’, as part of UK Older People’s Day 2012.

The event was designed to challenge stereotypes by encouraging younger people to learn from the older generation.

Residents and children from the school split into three groups to each focus on a different ability.

The youngsters learned to circle dance, made cards in the craft room and shared their favourite books during a reading group in the library.

Alison Parry, facilities and event manager at Hollymere, said: “The whole event has been a great success.

“The residents managed to engage the children who were really eager to learn; the reading group was so successful that it will now become a regular occurrence, with the residents teaching the pupils how to read with confidence and introducing them to a wide range of great books.”
