WHAT can you buy for £100,000 nowadays?

Half a terrace house in Rhos, a quarter share in a McLaren F1 or a football team?

Well, most Wrexham fans will be hoping it's the latter.

The prize money from Wednesday's FAW Premier Cup victory over Rhyl will be vital in attempting to keep the team together for next season and perhaps priming the Dragons for a promotion push.

The nucleus of a good side is there with Lawrence, Ferguson, the two Edwardses and even Llewellyn - but now Denis Smith really needs to earn his money by attempting to keep them on a shoestring, as well as attracting a few quality reinforcements to supplement the side.

But a big question remains. If you can't pay the players during the season when you've got money coming in from gate receipts, then how are you going to pay them during the leaner summer months? We could bring in players on lower basic wages and higher bonuses or even set up contracts to just pay them during the season (however, see above for reasons why that may not work).

Our Centre of Excellence has recently been called one of the best in the Football League and next season it will have to prove it.

Youngsters from this season's reserves look sure to be pushed into the first team if, as expected, we lose some of the more experienced players like Jim Whitley.

The likes of Levi Mackin, Mark Jones, Jimmy McNulty, Wayne Leather and Simon Spender could have an impact next term.

However, it could be with a side struggling near the bottom of the table.

Our beloved chairman, Mark Guterman, has recently spent millions on buying the freehold to the ground. Let's hope he got a few extra 100k from the banks to make sure there's a team playing on it next summer.
