NORTH Wales Police is the highest ranking force in Wales in terms of equality.

Results from Stonewall’s annual ‘Workplace Equality Index’, which showcases the UK’s top employers for gay people, saw North Wales Police score in the top 50 employers in England and Wales.

Jenny Porter, Stonewall community liaison officer, said: “Congratulations to North Wales Police. This achievement is a clear demonstration of their commitment to equality for all their staff.

“Their commitment to tackle homophobia in the community was evidenced in the partnership work with Stonewall Cymru to produce a guide for victims of homophobic hate crime.”

Employers are ranked according to criteria ranging from implementation of an effective equality policy to demonstrating how they engage with their lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) staff, customers and service users.

Assistant Chief Constable Ian Shannon said: “This demonstrates our commitment to the communities we serve. I am determined to ensure that LGB people who live in, work or visit North Wales can feel secure and see North Wales Police as an employer of choice.”
