ON TUESDAY, November 11, the popular autumn series of concerts held weekly at the Royal British Legion, Llay, Wrexham continues when foremost North West band, the guitar/sax led Steve Oakes Quartet takes the stand.

The quartet, led by guitarist Steve Oakes, a frequent performer at the Wirral International Guitar Festival, plays a blend of Latin jazz, funk and bebop.

Joining Steve Oakes is accomplished young saxophonist Ed Kainyek, a favourite player at jazz venues across the region.

Co-leader with trumpeter Steve Chadwick, whose Magic Hat Ensemble has won considerable praise from North Wales Jazz Society audiences, of the quartet Off the Wagon, Ed’s career highlights include a jam session at the popular Matt and Phred’s Jazz Club in Manchester when several members of the Wynton Marsalis Lincoln Center Orchestra dropped in to play with his quartet!

Between them, Ed and Steve’s influences include the great Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter and Grover Washington and the legendary Wes Montgomery and Pat Metheny, making for an eclectic mix of jazz styles.

Completing the line-up of the Steve Oakes Quartet are two fine young rhythm section players, Gavin Barras (double bass) and Tim Franks (drums).
