POLICE are calling on residents to be vigilant and help stop their elderly neighbours becoming victims of distraction burglary.

Ellesmere Port has seen a rise in this type of crime over the last few weeks, usually involving bogus officials pretending to be from water or electricity companies.

The offenders often say they are working in the area and ask to be let into the house to carry out checks.

While the occupant is distracted, a second offender can then get into the house and steal valuables.

Sgt Mike Ankers from the Western area proactive policing team, said: “We always urge people to ask for identification if someone calls at their door.

“Genuine callers will not be offended if you ask for identification and check it with the company they claim to be from.

“We would also like residents to keep their eye on elderly neighbours who might be getting visits from these kind of callers.

“Do not be afraid to call the police if you think a neighbour is being targeted in this way.”
