CYCLISTS are being urged to make sure they use good security locks after a spate of bicycles thefts.

Thieves have been targeting bicycles in the Whitby Park area of Ellesmere Port over recent weeks so police are appealing for cyclists to take better security measures and avoid becoming a victim of crime.

PC Warwick Evans said: “We have stepped up patrols in the area and are working to trace the owners of any bicycles we recover. However, there are a few things cyclists can do to avoid becoming a victim of crime in the first place.

“Bicycle thieves are opportunistic and will go for easy targets so simple security measures do make a difference.

“If bikes are kept in sheds or garages, they need to be kept out of sight and securely locked. I would also ask people to invest in a decent bike lock and secure their bike even if they only leave it for a few minutes.

“People thinking of buying a bike would be wise to ask staff at the shop they are getting it from if they will record the details of the sale. This will help the police to get their bike back to its rightful owner should they be unfortunate enough to have it stolen.”
