POLICE in the Wrexham area are appealing to motorists, particularly the elderly, to be on their guard from sneak thieves.

The warning comes following an incident in Wrexham as a result of which an elderly woman had her purse stolen from her handbag by two people who asked for directions.

The incident happened between 1pm and 1.20pm on Saturday, November 22.

The victim had parked her car in the Aldi car park and while still in the vehicle two people, a man and a woman approached her. They opened the passenger side door and asked for directions. The man leant into the car and opened up a sheet type map and asked for directions to Manchester or Chester, which covered the handbag from view.

The elderly lady told him to get out of her car and to go into the nearby shop to ask however the man refused.

It appears that during this time, the woman who was with the man managed to unzip the elderly woman’s bag and remove the purse without the elderly driver realising.

It was only on the woman’s return home did she realise that her purse was missing.

Police inquires are already underway and although this kind of incident is rare, officers are calling on people to be vigilant. Officers are also appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident onto contact PC 2478 Godbeer on 0845 6071001 (Welsh language line) or 0845 6071002 (English language line) or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
