LOCALS are planning a picnic for their campaign to turn a field into a village green – not a football stadium.

Up to 80 people are expected on the field at Rock Road, Rhosymedre, near Wrexham, on Monday afternoon.

They are protesting at plans to build a new stadium for Newi Cefn Druids on the land there.

Chairwoman of Rhosymedre Village Green Action Group Jackie Palmer said: “We are not against the stadium or the Tesco development – just the locations where they are proposing to build them.

“We have applied to the council to designate the field where the stadium is proposed to be built, a village green.

“It is a lovely location for people to enjoy and it also as historic importance as this is where they quarried the stone for the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct.”

Newi Cefn Druids want a new 5000 capacity stadium at the site in Rhosymedre.

It is part of a development which will see a new Tesco store built on the Plas Kynnaston site where the Druids currently play.

It’s thought the 25,000-sq foot Tesco will create 140 jobs.
