MORE than 400 people have signed a petition on the Prime Minister’s website demanding that plans be abandoned to divide Cheshire into two councils.

Secretary of State Hazel Blears announced in December she wants to simplify the current structure by replacing it with a West Cheshire Council and an East Cheshire Council.

The move will see the abolition of the county council and the six district councils which share responsibilities of local government.

A Cheshire County Council proposal to create one all-purpose council for Cheshire was rejected as being too big and remote from the people, although the county is still fighting to overturn the decision.

A petition appeared on the Prime Minister’s official website, put forward by Adam Heathcote and signed by 404 people, which begins: “We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to prevent the break up of the County of Cheshire.”

The petition adds:

“Cheshire is a rural county, and works better united.”
