A PENSIONER was forced to watch in horror as burglars stole cash and jewellery from her home in Chirk.

The 86-year-old, who lives on her own in Ewart Street, Chirk, was watching the television at about 8.30pm on Monday, December 8, when she heard noises from upstairs.

After investigating, she was shocked to see two men coming down the stairs.

They pushed the pensioner to one side before searching the living room and running off with the cash and jewellery.

A police spokeswoman confirmed that the woman was shaken-up but not hurt. Both burglars are described as white, one with fair hair and the other with dark hair, and police are appealing for witnesses.

DC Dewi Davies blasted the incident as 'appalling', but said they were hopeful of tracing the thieves after it was discovered they stole old-style notes which they may be trying to exchange.

He said: 'We believe they stole some old-style £20 notes and would appeal to banks in the area to keep a look-out for anyone changing a quantity of £20 to the newer type of notes and let us know about anyone who raises their suspicions.

'This was a sickening incident where an elderly lady has been targeted. We would appeal to anyone who saw these men in the area who may have spotted a vehicle parked in the locality to contact us with any information they have.

'We are keen to catch those responsible as soon as possible.' Anyone with information is asked to call DC Davies on (01978) 294547.
