RUDHEATH pensioner Eric Sawyer could be forgiven for feeling a bit overwhelmed when he swapped his usual Thursday lunch date with pals at the pub for a chat with Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace.

The 86-year-old war veteran and marathon man was invited to the palace to receive the MBE which he was made in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list.

Eric, who usually walks over to Lower Peover for lunch at The Crown on Thursdays, said of his trip to London: “I felt very honoured to be invited to receive my MBE at Buckingham Palace but also a bit overwhelmed.

“I told Prince Charles I usually go on an eight mile walk on a Thursday and he said I was doing very well for my age. He was very easy to talk too.”

Eric was made an MBE in recognition of all his hard work for the Royal Air Force Association.

He has been involved in the successful running of the Northwich branch since it opened and every year during Battle of Britain Week embarks on a charity trek which has raised nearly £50,000 in 26 years.
