PASSENGERS were evacuated from a train after it caught fire in Ellesmere Port.

Members of the public escaped unhurt but guards on board the Merseryrail service needed treatment for smoke inhalation at Little Sutton train station on Thursday at 10.30am.

Fire crews from Chester, Ellesmere Port and Merseyside attended the scene and extinguished the blaze, caused by a part of the train hitting debris on the track.

Guards on board the Liverpool Central to Ellesmere Port service asked passengers to leave the train at Little Sutton before firefighters brought the small blaze under control.
