Hoylake 20 Winnington Park 12

PARK’S search for that elusive first win of the Cheshire and South Lancs Division One season goes on after their sixth consecutive defeat on Saturday.

The Burrows Hill men travelled to the Wirral in high spirits following last week’s gutsy performance against league leaders Burnage but poor defence cost them early on.

Hoylake number eight Jones broke through several tackles to open the scoring before the hosts’ young fly-half sliced open Park’s defence to open up a 12-0 lead.

Harry Stubbs, returning from injury, got Park back into the game with a try following a quick tap penalty. And Park were soon level after Mark Phoenix crashed over following good work from Mark Patterson.

Park had chances to close out the match but ill-discipline and a failure to finish off moves cost them dear.

Hoylake hung on and sealed the points with a penalty and a late try from winger Howard to send Park home frustrated.

On Saturday, Park host seventh-placed Ormskirk (2.15pm ko) while the seconds travel to Sefton 2nds (2.15pm).
