Winnington Park 5 Southport 1

WINNINGTON completed an amazing turnaround at Sir John Deane’s on Saturday by thrashing the team that beat them 8-2 on the season’s opening day.

It was an accomplished performance and featured the constant threat and pace of Chris Mottershaw, Peter Evans, Dennis Topping and Steve Campagnaro, which had Southport on the back foot from the off.

But half time was 10 minutes away before Park scored. Topping was fouled in the D when through on goal and Mark Leigh dispatched the stroke with the minimum of effort.Š

Captain Adam Kueres almost doubled the lead soon after but his run and reverse stick shot was cleared off the line by the retreating full back.Š

Leigh and Mark Whalley at the heart of the Winnington defence were again outstanding and restricted Southport to half chances and short corners.

Kueres and Danny Moores bossed the midfield and the goals began to flow, firstly from Evans after a fine move involving Jeff Dodd and Sam Cloake.

Topping and Mottershaw got on the scoresheet with well-taken goals of their own after more impressive build-up play.Š Park weren’t finished yet. Pete Huggon and Campagnaro piled on the pressure and Leigh rounded off a fine performance from a short corner after a neat one-two with Topping.Š John-Paul Dodd’s clean sheet was spoiled in the last minute.

Winnington 3rds were also among the goals, though they were flattered by their 4-1 win at Knutsford.

The home side were deservedly in front, but Matt Morley equalised and after the break Kenny Roberts converted a penalty and Mike Dodd and Will Eggleston were also on the mark.

Park trail Runcorn, but have five points to spare on third-placed Bramhall in North West Division Eight South.
