A PAEDOPHILE who downloaded almost 4,000 indecent images and videos of children tried to blame the offences on his brother.

Convicted drug courier Robin Cartwright, 24, of Robinson Road, Little Sutton, claimed he started viewing images of young girls after being influenced by a cellmate while in prison.

Cartwright, who had an ‘unhealthy’ obsession with porn since he was a teenager, pleaded guilty to possessing 3,855 indecent images and videos of children at Chester Crown Court on Friday, February 8.

Cartwright – jailed for two years in September 2010 for his role in a gang which flooded the streets of  Ellesmere Port,  Ormskirk, North Wales, Avon and Somerset with cocaine –  admitted  downloading the images on his family’s home computers after he was released from prison on licence.

On December 13, 2011, police visited Cartwright’s family home in Little Sutton after a large-scale operation pinpointed users of a public website containing thousands of pornographic images of children, the court heard.

But Cartwright initially blamed his younger brother for the downloaded images, which were found on two home computers and a laptop under his sibling’s bed.

Police found six Level 5 images – the most extreme – as well as six at  Level 4, 20 at Level 3, 51 at Level 2 and 3,772 Level 1 images. There were 22 videos of children.

Jean Maxwell, prosecuting, said: “[Cartwright] initially provided an alibi for the dates of the downloads. His father and brother were questioned, but his father had been coaching football and his brother was on a Duke of Edinburgh trip.

“But police discovered his eBay account had been accessed over the five-hour period at the time of his alibi. He accepted he would have been unlikely to leave a friend on his own for five hours unsupervised.”

Cartwright, who watched adult pornography two to three times a week since he was 19, claimed he was influenced into looking at images of young girls by a cellmate in jail.

Peter Barnett, defending, said Cartwright had only looked at a few of the images and many had been deleted. He  was trying to move out of the family home, had a stable job and was trying  to move on  with his life.

Sentencing Cartwright to six months imprisonment, suspended for two years, and ordering him to undertake a sexual offences prevention order, Judge Elgan Edwards, the Recorder of Chester,  said: “You were already watching pornography for a period of five years, which is not an offence, but it is somewhat unhealthy for someone of your age to be that involved in that type of activity.”

Cartwright has signed the Sex Offenders Register and will remain on it for 10 years.
