AN off-duty police officer foiled an armed robber at a Winsford off licence yesterday afternoon, Wednesday.

The male PC stopped the 20-year-old suspect, who was carrying a firearm, at 1.30pm as he entered Threshers on Over Square.

A Cheshire Police spokeswoman said this afternoon, Thursday: “The officer, who is based at Winsford HQ, acted swiftly in detaining a 20-year old-man from Liverpool.

“The suspect was armed with a handgun and a concealed knife. The firearm was later discovered to be an imitation. The man remains in custody and is being interviewed by police.”

Supt Guy Hindle said the officer’s actions as being “typical of the officer, who is experienced, professional and committed to his role, both on and off duty.”
