STRIKER Chris Llewellyn is confident Wrexham’s returning fire-power will transform the side from League Two strugglers to play-off contenders.

Speaking after Tuesday evening’s 1-1 draw at a windswept Torquay United, the Welsh international said the appalling weather conditions had been a decisive factor at Plainmoor and claimed a draw was the least the Dragons deserved.

Unable to build on a early lead provided by on-loan Kevin Smith – his second goal in as many games – Wrexham were undone by a superb Jordan Robertson free-kick at the start of the second half.

And Llewellyn said: “It was a game of two halves and the wind played a massive role.

“If we’d gone in at 2-0, we would probably won the game because they didn’t really threaten our goal apart from the free-kick.

“They had a lot of possession but we feel a bit hard done by.”

It was the Dragons’ first point on the road since August when they returned from neighbours Chester City with maximum points and extended an unbeaten run to three matches, a sequence that will be tested once more at Boston United this weekend.

“We would have been massively disappointed if we had come away with nothing,” added Llewellyn.

“A point at Torquay after Saturday’s win at Scunthorpe is something of a positive.

“We’re not really paying much attention to the away record because we go into every game looking to win, home or away, and we’ll go into Saturday’s game with the same sort of confidence.

“We have now gone three games unbeaten and we feel we can carry on at Boston.”

Currently the club’s joint leading scorer with seven goals, the striker said the involvement of substitutes Lee McEvilly and Juan Ugarte was a hint of things to come

“I’ve scored a few goals already and would have liked another one at Torquay, but we’ve got a lot of strikers coming back now so hopefully we’ll start scoring more regularly because we are desperate to get out of this league.

“There are a lot of good players here, who perhaps aren’t suited to the football in this division, but hopefully by the end of the season we will get what we deserve.

“There’s a huge difference between League Two and League One and maybe some of the players struggle with the physical side, so everyone has to adapt, but we remain confident we have the ability to get the job done.”

Wrexham manager Denis Smith admitted the loss of midfielder Mark Jones at half time because of illness meant McEvilly had been pressed into action earlier than anticipated with Llewellyn dropping back to fill the gap.

“It was a hard-working battle of a performance,” he said afterwards.

“Mark has been feeling ill since this morning and his head was banging, so that disrupted us because McEvilly has not played any football and giving him 45 minutes was asking a lot.

“We also missed Llewellyn’s runs up front but we had make the changes. In spite of that, we’ve got a point and it’s another game undefeated.

“The longer we keep doing that the better we will be.”

The Racecourse boss said he was again pleased with his side’s defensive display, epitomised by Steve Evans completing the game even though he was involved in a nasty clash of heads during the second half.

“Steve has had a couple of stitches in his eyebrow, but defensively again we were very solid,” manager Smith added.

“Lee Roche was excellent again and the two central midfield players did extremely well, so we can’t really complain about the performance given the difficult conditions.

“McEvilly has come through the game in fine fettle and Neil Roberts, Matty Done and Ugarte are due to play in the reserves, so things are looking up.

“We saw little bits that suggest both Lee and Juan can score goals and I was pleased for Kevin Smith again.

“If we can get a result at Boston on Saturday then it’s been a great week.”

Last night’s reserve clash with Oldham at Buckley was called off due to a waterlogged pitch.
