POLICE files show three Mid Cheshire murders remain unsolved, one dating back more than 30 years.

A Freedom of Information request revealed Cheshire Constabulary has 18 unsolved murders on its books in total, including three committed in Sandiway, Northwich and Winsford.

Charles Jones, 42, was brutally attacked while walking from the RAF Wings Club in Northwich to his home at Parkfield Drive, Rudheath, in January, 1998.

He later died after developing a blood clot on the brain as a result of his injuries two weeks after leaving Leighton Hospital. Detectives reportedly followed up 700 leads, all of which drew a blank.

Also unsolved is the 1998 murder of dog walker Julia Webb, 52, who was found dead in a wooded area off Kennel Lane, Sandiway.

Mrs Webb was found by her son Chris, then 26, half-a-mile from their home on Weaverham Road. She had been beaten around the head with a blunt object and dumped in bushes.

And no-one was ever caught for the 1978 killing of Winsford farmer Leslie Guntrip at his home in Meadow Bank.

Mr Guntrip was battered to death in one of the county’s oldest unsolved cases. The only item taken from the scene was a single barrel, 12-bore shotgun.

Nineteen years later another shotgun was found buried near Mr Guntrip’s home, but detectives could not link it to his murder.

A Cheshire Constabulary spokesperson said: “All unresolved cases are subject to a two-year rolling periodic review by the major crime review team.

“Cases are never closed and where viable lines of investigation are identified by review processes, the Force Major Investigation Team is engaged to pursue them.”
