POLICE are warning the public to be vigilant after a distraction burglary in Oakmere this afternoon.

At just before 1pm a man masquerading as a Water Board official gained entry to the home of an elderly woman on Abbey Lane and stole almost £400 cash.

A Cheshire Police spokeswoman said: “He left the premises on foot and is described as a white man aged in his early 20s. He was wearing jeans and a navy blue sweater and spoke with an Irish accent.

“Fortunately, the victim was unhurt during the incident, but she was left shaken and very upset.

“Police remind all residents to be vigilant and to ask for official identification before allowing anyone access to their property. Anyone working on behalf of a utility company or similar organisation would be able to produce authentic identification.

“We also advise that residents telephone the company that the caller states they are from before allowing them into their homes.

“Should anyone have any information in relation to this incident, or experienced a similar caller at their homes, they are advised to contact their local police. If the people are still in the area, call 999.”
