WREXHAM captain Neil Roberts claims he is winning his battle for fitness ahead of Saturday’s crunch encounter at Lincoln City.

The striker has urged fans not to lose faith with five games left for the Dragons to climb out of the Football League basement zone.

A calf strain five minutes into the home game against Mansfield Town prevented Roberts from featuring in a pointless Easter programme against Macclesfield and Notts County, but last night he was optimistic about his chances of a Sincil Bank return.

“Things are looking quite good,” he said yesterday. “I have been in for treatment this morning and I did some running, but obviously what happens over the next couple of days will decide whether I play.

“It goes without saying I want to be involved on Saturday and I’m feeling quite positive that the problem has settled down, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I’ll be able to join in properly before the end of the week.”

Roberts was among a number of non-playing squad members who joined Wrexham fans on the terraces at Moss Rose last Saturday where the manner of the Dragons’ 2-0 defeat attracted criticism from a section of the 1,700 travelling supporters.

“It was not very nice standing there, to be honest,” he added. “It was one of those occasions when there were just not three or four lads having a bad game, but most of them held their hands up afterwards and admitted it was not good enough.

“We certainly can’t afford any more performances like that between now and the end of the season and we saw a much better display on Monday against Notts County, even though the result went against us at the death.

“It was not pleasant hearing the fans at Macclesfield, but I’m a fan myself and while I can understand the frustration, I’d like everyone to be as positive as possible.

“Hopefully they haven’t given up on us yet because there are still a lot of points to play for and we’ll be going all out to put it right on Saturday by winning at Lincoln.”

Midfielder Danny Williams, suspended for Wrexham’s last two matches, played for an hour as the Dragons reserves beat Tranmere Rovers’ second string on Tuesday evening to confirm his availability for the weekend trip to Lincoln City.

Wrexham manager Brian Carey is keeping his fingers crossed that loan midfielder Robbie Garrett will also be back after illness.

“Robbie has been suffering really badly with a heavy dose of flu after a really hectic schedule,” said Carey yesterday. “He’s played a lot of games for us and then had a trip across Europe to Romania with Northern Ireland and it all just finally caught up with him.

“But we are hoping he’ll be back in for training in the morning and we’ll have a look at him then.”

Meanwhile Saturday’s opponents Lincoln have been stunned by the news that captain Paul Morgan has asked to leave the club at the end of the season.

The defender has made over 230 appearances in six seasons at Sincil Bank, but wants to move in the summer due to “personal issues”.

"I've had a meeting with Paul and I understand his situation and why he wants to leave," said boss John Schofield.
