WREXHAM defender Andy Holt said no amount of excuses could compensate for his disappointment with Saturday's display at Kenilworth Road against League One leaders Luton Town.

"We had a good enough team out there to have put up a better performance than we did today. We've let ourselves and the fans down, so there can be no excuses whatsoever," he said after the 5-1 defeat.

"We were 4-0 down at the break and the game was over. Okay, we did a bit better after half time, but whether that was because we improved or that maybe they took their foot off the pedal is open to question."

The Dragons wing-back said little had gone right for the visitors, but insisted the result would not have a lasting effect.

"At the end of the day they scored five goals, but hopefully that's our one battering for the season," he added. "You have to look at it in that light and we can't even anticipate the prospect of other teams doing it to us during the rest of the campaign.

"It could have been very different if we'd scored early on, but a couple of their headers have gone in close to the stanchion whereas Chris, for example, put his chances just wide. On another day we'd have been 1-0 up and the situation would have been changed.

"It's a difficult result to take but we've got to move on. There's another game on Tuesday and we've got to look to be getting three points at Blackpool."

Dragons boss Denis Smith said he was more concerned at the moment about the club's perilous financial state than results.

With an Inland Revenue winding-up petition due to be heard in the High Court on November 17, he said: "We've got to get through the next two weeks and see if we still have a club to run.

"That's the most important result we want, and if we get that the rest of the season will take care of itself.

"With the team I was able to put out we had two strikers on the bench and that was it, apart from kids.

"The injuries I've got are long-term, and until I get to a situation where I can possibly bring someone in - hopefully sooner rather than later - as long as we've got a club around us to do that, then I'm not going to worry too much about this result."

With his side 4-0 down at the break, Smith said he had encouraged his players to start from scratch in the second half.

"I told them it was important not to be beaten in the second half, which they achieved.

"It would have been nice to have won it but we have to look at this game as a one-off.

"We didn't deal with the ball into the box and we've got to track players better, but the off-field injuries are bound to have an effect.

"I'm disappointed because we hadn't lost for seven games, and to get beaten up as we have been today is disappointing.

"But what we've got to do now is look ahead to the game on Tuesday."
