A NEW website aims to tackle chlamydia after it emerged about one in ten young people in Western Cheshire has the sexually-transmitted disease.

NHS Western Cheshire’s cool-looking website – www.rusure.org.uk – encourages young people to get themselves tested for chlamydia – an easily-spread infection that can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility.

If diagnosed, a course of antibiotics will quickly clear it up but 70 per cent of young women and half of young men do not even know they have the infection.

NHS Western Cheshire has set itself a target of screening 25-35% – or nearly 11,000 – of 15-24 year olds over the next 12 months.

The NHS recommends people are tested each year, with repeat tests after each new sexual partner.

Any form of unprotected sexual intercourse can put someone at risk of catching chlamydia, including oral sex.

The new website offers free chlamydia testing to 15-24 year olds who can choose to receive their results by text message or letter.
