THREE wards at Leighton Hospital which were closed last week in a bid to slow the spread of the vomiting bug norovirus have reopened.

Twenty-six patients at the hospital were confirmed as having viral gastroenteritis, forcing health chiefs to temporarily close Wards One, Two and Six to new patients in order to control the spread of infection.

Health bosses advised people who had been hit by a diarrhoea and vomiting bug to think twice about visiting relatives or friends at the hospital.

The situation was monitored by the NHS infection and prevention control service and senior managers, who worked with staff to ensure that activity returned to normal as quickly as possible.

A spokeswoman for Leighton Hospital said all three wards, which were temporary closed to new patients, were reopened on Monday.

She said that there were still restricted areas on the wards as nine patients were still confirmed as having the bug.

Karen Egan, head of infection prevention and control, said: “The symptoms of norovirus include vomiting and sometimes diarrhoea and are usually short-lived. People usually recover without treatment by ensuring that they have plenty of fluids and rest.”
