A NEWT reserve looks set to be created as part of a project to prepare unused land in Sandymoor South for development.

Land to the east of the Bridgewater Canal, earmarked for housing under the Sandymoor master plan, is the subject of a planning application for drainage work, “comprehensive” earthworks, other land changes, as well as construction of a newt reserve.

The Environment Agency has raised no objections but is demanding that a range of conditions is adhered to.

They include newt protection measures outlined in an “amphibian mitigation strategy” document, and surveys to identify populations of great crested newts and water voles.
